Mims was a highly touted recruit who was supposed to form a potent front court with Rolan Roberts. Mims averaged 17.5 points and 9.5 rebounds per game as a senior at Freedom High School while shooting almost 60% from the field.
Mims played at Tech for two full seasons and the beginning of a third. He flashed very good potential, and led the Hokies in scoring and rebounding as a sophomore. But he had repeated disagreements with Ricky Stokes, and also was in trouble for the Virginia Tech Judicial Review Board for his actions with a female student. Mims left the team shortly after his junior season began.
