Grindstaff was a highly decorated high school player with outstanding ablity. He was named Mr. Basketball in North Carolina following his senior season. One of only 15 North Carolina players to score over 2,000 points in a career. A Top 100 player nationally by Bob Gibbons.
Grindstaff brought some excitement to Tech basketball with him. He averaged 10.5 points per game as a starting freshman, and it looked like the Hokies had their point guard of the future. However, Grindstaff left the program under mysterious circumstances following his freshman season. He transferred to Tennessee, where he had to overcome a torn ACL as well as the death of his parents. He was a spot starter and major contributor for the Vols for his entire career. However, he was never the same player following his knee injury.
