Thompkins averaged 21.8 points, 12.6 rebounds and 4 assists per game his senior year at Lake Gibson High School. He left basketball for a couple of years between high school and signing with the Hokies. CNNSI.com named Thompkins the Sleeper of the 2001 Big East Recruiting Class.
Thompkins played his freshman season as a backup, and started in the frontcourt along with Terry Taylor during his sophomore year. Much more effective as a sophomore due to a loss in weight. Had 6 blocks vs. Michigan as a sophomore. He was showing progress and looked to have the potential to become a solid player, but he left the program after his sophomore season.
