Gathings averaged 15 points and 6 rebounds per game at Hargrave Military Academy. Previously, he led Parkland High School to the state championship.
Gathings played part of his freshman season for Tech. He was not eligible until the first semester was over. He showed flashes of being a good player as a freshman, averaging 7 points per game, but left the program after the season was completed. He transferred to High Point University, where he had a great career. He was named Big South Player of the Year in 2003-04.
