Matthews was a great football and basketball player for Columbia High School, and decided on basketball for college. He averaged 23 points and 10 rebounds per game as a senior at Columbia.
After a shaky first two seasons during which Matthews struggled to protect the basketball, he developed into a Big East star during his junior and senior seasons. He finished 10th in Tech history in scoring 1652 points, and led the Big East in scoring during his senior season with an average of 22.1 points per game.
