The Tyrod Taylor redshirt experiment lasted exactly one week. In last Tuesday's press conference, Frank Beamer announced the intention to redshirt Taylor for the 2008 season. In this afternoon's press conference, Beamer announced that both Taylor and Sean Glennon will play this weekend against Furman.

"We plan to play both Sean Glennon and Tyrod Taylor this weekend," Beamer said during the press conference.

"The No. 1 need for us is to be a good running football team. For several different reasons that needs to be our strength and I think by putting a guy in the backfield that makes plays, he'll cause something to happen."

Beamer added, "I think Tyrod Taylor is a much better player from a knowledge standpoint and reading coverages then a year ago. He's farther along there. I also like his ability to throw the football."

The announcement comes in the wake of Virginia Tech's 27-22 loss to East Carolina on Saturday. The Hokies held the lead until the final minutes before the Pirates rallied to win.

The Virginia Tech offense struggled throughout the game, missing two scoring opportunities in the red zone on their first two possessions. In the end, they only scored two touchdowns on the day, and one was on a short 25 yard drive after a special teams turnover by East Carolina.

Sean Glennon was 14-of-23 for 137 yards and two interceptions against the Pirates. At this point it isn't clear how much we'll see each quarterback, but we do know that they'll both play.

"I'm not going to get into who's starting, or how much each will play," Beamer said. "I've asked both quarterbacks not to do interviews this week."

Virgil Named ACC Defensive Back of the Week

Virginia Tech field corner Stephan Virgil was named ACC Defensive Back on Monday. His performance on Saturday against East Carolina was one of the bright spots in an otherwise disappointing day.

Virgil picked up a backwards pass in the second quarter and returned it 30 yards for a score. He later returned a blocked extra point for two points. He also had six tackles for the game. With eight points scored against East Carolina, Virgil is Tech's leading scorer so far this season.
