Seth Greenberg

  • Tech ran a well executed play when they got Jeff Allen to the line for the game winning free throw. Maryland likes to extend on screens, and they were able to slip Allen under the basket. He did a great job of collecting the ball and drawing the foul.
  • With Eric Hayes out, they wanted to wear Greivis Vasquez down. They wanted him to have to work hard to get the basketball and make his work defensively. They screened him a lot.
  • Sean Singletary has the ability to will his team to win. Last year at UVA, the Hoos came out and made about four of their first five. Greenberg isn't sure they were good shots, but Singletary kind of willed them in.
  • Singletary has the ability to score and make those around him better. He's also a terrific on-ball defender.
  • Jeff Allen was ACC Rookie of the Week. He got Tech off to a great start against Maryland, and did a great job rebounding the ball.
  • Bambale Osby of Maryland plays very hard. He's a great competitor. Greenberg would love to have him playing for Tech.
  • Hank Thorns made a great pass on A.D. Vassallo's baseline dunk. Vassallo is a much better athlete than people give him credit for.
  • Hank Thorns played aggressively and confidently. He played excellent defense. He came up with some big steals.
  • The ACC is #1 in the RPI. If the ACC is down, then what's wrong with the rest of the country? There is so much parity across the country. Boston College lost at home to Robert Morris 57-51, then came back and beat Wake Forest, scoring 112 points in the process.
  • Miami is having a great year. They have a terrific frontcourt. They have three legit big guys in Anthony King, Jimmy Graham and Dwayne Collins. NC State is talented and they'll get better. It's so early in the season, and there is a lot to play out.
  • Tech has made 138 out of their last 185 free throws. That's 75%. It's all about getting the right guys to the line. Malcolm Delaney is a great free throw shooter, as is A.D. Vassallo. Deron Washington is much improved.
  • Tech stole a couple of possessions from Maryland just on hustle plays. Greenberg is very proud of that.
  • Maryland went small, so Tech went small. Greenberg didn't want the Terps to start pressing when the Hokies had a bigger lineup in the game.
  • Tech didn't call a timeout to set up their final shot. Sometimes it's difficult to get the ball in. Sometimes Maryland will go man or zone out of a timeout, and it's tough to predict. Greenberg didn't want to have to call a timeout, then inbound it, then reset the offense.
  • Seth still talks to his brother Brad quite often. James Johnson, who replaced Brad on Tech's staff, has been a great addition. He's a great recruiter and he's great with the players.
  • Tech spent two hours on Monday going over what they want to do against Virginia in transition. UVA is a very different team that Georgia Tech, who the Hokies play on Saturday. Both teams shoot the ball well, however. The Yellow Jackets haven't been able to get over the hump, but they almost beat Kansas earlier in the year.
  • Virginia is a very good basketball team. Singletary is having a great year, and Calvin Baker has been a great addition. Adrian Joseph is doing a great job as well.
  • UVA really shoots the ball well at home. They are averaging almost 10 made three-pointers per game. Tech has to contain Singletary in transition, because he can kick it out to a bunch of other shooters.
  • It's not a bad turnaround from UVA to Georgia Tech. The Hokies will travel to Atlanta at 1pm on Friday. The next weekend is very difficult. Tech plays Duke next Thursday at home at 7pm, then plays at Boston College on Saturday at 4.
  • Greenberg wanted to reward Terrance Vinson for his hard work, so he played him against Maryland. Greenberg isn't sure he's anything more than what we see, but he's a hard worker and a great teammate.
  • Lewis Witcher has had a rough week. His dad has been in and out of the hospital with a pretty serious illness the last two weeks. Lewis has had a hard time with it.
  • Also, fans still need to remember that Witcher is only halfway through his sophomore season. He's quick, he's long and he's skilled. He has to get more assertive.
  • Tech has to take UVA out of transition and guard the ball. The Hokies have to rebound the ball, because the Hoos are great on the glass. Tech has to grab the long rebounds.
  • Cheick Diakite didn't speak English when he first came to the United States. He spoke French, as well as four other languages. He's added English over the past few years, and now he speaks it perfectly. He'll graduate in 3.5 years.
  • Tech's players are fairly oblivious to the Tech-UVA rivalry. They just want to go play some basketball. They'll have a better understanding of the rivalry after they go out to take their first warm ups.

Monday was Day 1,143 of Virginia Tech's continuous possession of the Commonwealth Cup.
