Seth Greenberg
- The team played well against Iowa, especially early on. They used their
speed to push Iowa away from the basket and take them out of their offensive
plan.
- The Hokies took care of the ball pretty well against George Washington,
but unfortunately three of their turnovers came early in the second half
when the Colonials went on their run. Zabian Dowdell was 1-of-9 from the
field, but took good shots for the most part. He just needs to make them.
- Tech has to guard the ball better. They gave up too much dribble
penetration. They need to find a way to close out games. They had a chance
to get off to a good start in the second half, but Dowdell missed an open
shot.
- The Hokies aren't playing as well as they can play. They have to guard
the ball better and they have to get more production out of the frontcourt.
- One play (the missed dunk against GW) won't define Coleman Collins. He'll
be fine, they just have to stay behind him. That play won't define who he
is as a player or person. He missed the entire preseason (due to injury).
Greenberg would rather see him miss that dunk, but get rebounds in the
second half to make up for it.
- Coleman Collins has to carve out space in order to get the ball down low.
He also needs to rebound. He played 15 minutes in the second half against
George Washington and did not get a single rebound.
- George Washington went to a small lineup in the second half, so Cheick
Diakite would have had to have guarded a smaller, much quicker player, and
would have spent more time on the perimeter. That, along with three fouls,
is why we didn't see him much in the second half. But he had six points
and four rebounds in eight minutes. A.D. Vassallo, Coleman Collins and Deron
Washington combined for five rebounds in 71 minutes.
- Tech's biggest problem at the beginning of the second half was they didn't
make any shots.
- Games like the GW game come down to getting one stop or one rebound, and
being a little tougher. That's how a lot of games are going to be decided
this year, and the Hokies need to get tougher down the stretch.
- Old Dominion is very good. They have a very experienced and physical
frontcourt. Drew Williamson is a very good guard. If they get ahead, they
slow the game down and start playing zone.
- Tech didn't get a payout for playing in the BB&T Classic because it
was for charity, but the Hokies will get George Washington in a return game
at Cassell Coliseum.
- The team is disappointed, but they'll be fine. There is a lot of
basketball left to be played. They have a great group of kids.
Billy Hite
- Branden Ore had a great season. He ran during the team run on Saturday. He
is about 85% right now, and he should be fine and ready to go for the bowl
game.
- Kenny Lewis, Jr. and George Bell have done a very good job. Bell is a
really good story. Hite tried to talk him into giving up football, but he
took time off and has come back strong. The fullbacks have played very well
also.
- Hite thought Ore had torn his ACL against Wake Forest. Thankfully it was
just an ankle. Lewis and Bell had prepared as if they were going to play, so
they were ready to go.
- Ore, Bell and Lewis have seen a lot. Ore has turned his life around, Bell
has overcome a bad knee, and Lewis spent a few years playing Minor League
Baseball. These guys have experience at things besides football.
- Kenny Lewis, Jr. wasn't tough enough when he first got to Tech.
Sometimes he just wasn't practicing because he wasn't quite 100%. He
finally figured out that you rarely feel 100% when you're playing
football.
- This season has been very rewarding. They have accomplished a lot after
losing so many players to the NFL. They were breaking in a new quarterback
and a new offensive line.
- Georgia, like the Hokies, played much better down the stretch. They are
very well-coached. Former VT wide receivers coach Tony Ball is coaching the
running backs at Georgia.
- Hite said in all the years that he has coached, he has never had a player
that practices as hard as Kenny Lewis, Jr. He really wants to be a good
player.
- Tony Ball knows a lot about Virginia Tech's personnel. That is the key
information that he can pass on to the rest of the Georgia staff. The Hokies
put in different sideline signals in the offseason because they knew they
would play against Danny Pearman and UNC. But overall, Ball's familiarity
with the Tech program probably won't make much of a difference.
- Hite said he didn't really think the Hokies would go 10-2 this year. He
was thinking 8-4 would be a “heck of a year.” That shows what kind of
players and coaches Virginia Tech has.
Charley Wiles
- Wiles has spent a lot of time on the road recruiting recently. Shutting
out Virginia is a good way to end the season before you go recruiting. He
has had several good in-home visits recently.
- You are always worried about decommitments, but this is a strong character
group of recruits, and Virginia Tech should be just fine. Going 10-2 and
heading to the Chick-fil-A Bowl helps you hold on to recruits.
- Barry Booker and Carlton Powell really stepped up their games. Booker was
fourth on the team in tackles. He is very instinctive. He is also very
athletic. He has gotten more physical at the point of attack. He made a lot
of plays this year.
- Carlton Powell is a very hard worker. He has good quickness. He is just a
warrior on the football field. He's the type of guy you want covering your
back.
- It's a credit to Bud Foster and the players that the Hokies were able to
be the #1 defense in the country again, despite losing so many players to
the NFL.
- There are a lot of good football players returning to Blacksburg next
season, especially on defense. Wiles is losing only Noland Burchette from
the defensive line. Nekos Brown, Jason Adjepong and John Graves are young
players to be excited about.
- Georgia is a very good football team. They were a great pick for the
Chick-fil-A Bowl. They sell out their own huge stadium every week, and they'll
bring a big crowd. This should be a great football game.
- Coach Foster is still holding onto the lunch pail. He plans to keep it
until someone outworks him for it.
Gary Stokan (President of Chick-fil-A Bowl)
- The Chick-fil-A Bowl is very excited about bringing in Virginia Tech. He
knows Coach Beamer because he sees him on vacation in Georgia every year,
and he has always wanted to bring the Hokies to Atlanta.
- Virginia Tech has already sold out their allotment of tickets, which is
very impressive. It's going to be an electric, BCS type atmosphere in the
Georgia Dome on December 30.
- The 2006 game will be the 10th straight sellout for the Chick-fil-A Bowl.
There will be a team walk from the Fan Fest area into the Dome, and Phil
Fulmer said that was the most exciting part of the experience when Tennessee
played in the Chick-fil-A Bowl several years back.
- The Hokies were on the Chick-fil-A Bowl's radar early in the season.
There was some concern when Tech lost two in a row. But the last six games,
especially the huge wins over Clemson and Wake Forest, opened the committee's
eyes.
- Virginia Tech is always known for defense and special teams, but they have
offensive playmakers as well. Ore is a great running back, and the game is
really slowing down for Sean Glennon. Everyone in Atlanta is looking forward
to a great game.
Monday was Day 737 of Virginia Tech's continuous possession of the Commonwealth Cup.
