Exciting 2009 Schedule for Virginia Tech

Football schedules for the 2009 season were released for all 12 ACC schools on Thursday, and it's never too early to look ahead. The Hokies have a big-time September schedule, and in general, making fun of Tech's out-of-conference scheduling philosophy is a thing of the past. We'll discuss that, and also take a look at some of the other ACC schedules.

Miller Discusses Change in Plans
February 11, 2009
Bassett (VA) lineman Andrew Miller fully expected to sign a letter of intent with Virginia Tech's wrestling program this spring, with the plan being to be on wrestling scholarship for one year before moving over to a football scholarship. That all changed about a week before National Football Signing Day and, last Wednesday, the 6-4, 275-pound prospect's name appeared with 20 other prospects on Tech's football signing day list.

Hosley Discusses Decision; VT Offers Jr. WR

By all accounts, Atlantic Community (Delray Beach, FL) cornerback Jayron Hosley was all set to sign with the University of South Florida last Wednesday. Hosley-to-USF was the conventional wisdom, but that was before the 5-10, 172-pound senior made an official visit to Virginia Tech on the weekend of January 30th-February 1st. The Florida Class 5A first-team all-state selection kept quiet about his decision until the morning of Signing Day, when he announced he would sign with Virginia Tech.

Oakton Star Excited About VT Opportunity

There is no question that former Oakton (Vienna, VA) standout Cody Grimm has made the most of his recruited walk-on opportunity at Virginia Tech, turning into a key contributor for the Hokies. Tech is looking for similar success with its latest recruited walk on out of Oakton, 6-2, 215-pound linebacker Jack Tyler.

Signing Day with Rhodes and Exum

TSL headed to Varina and Deep Run High Schools on Wednesday, National Signing Day, and caught up with defensive tackle DeAntre Rhodes and athlete Antone Exum. The 6-2, 270-pound Rhodes and the 6-0, 190-pound Exum are two of Tech's top recruits in the 2009 class and they are excited to officially be Hokies.

2009 Class: The Players

Last year at this time, Virginia Tech wasn't anticipating a big 2009 class. The original projection in terms of signees was thought to be anywhere from 11-15, but the staff ended up signing 21 kids yesterday. This does include D.J. Coles, who signed with Tech last February, as well as three possible grey-shirt candidates.

Tech Scores Signing Day Surprise!

Heading into last weekend's official visit to Virginia Tech, Atlantic Community (Delray Beach, FL) star cornerback Jayron Hosley was all but committed to the University of South Florida. Today's 10 a.m. press conference yielded a surprise, however, as the 5-10, 172-pound cornerback announced that he was signing with the Hokies.

Hokies Interested in Texas QB

Less than a day remains before National Signing Day, but a new target has surfaced for the Virginia Tech Hokies. Quarterback Bryce Petty, a 6-3, 215-pound signal caller out of Midlothian (TX), is drawing heavy interest from Virginia Tech and he plans to take a visit to Blacksburg soon.

Report: Collins Decides on Virginia Tech

Virginia Tech scored a big-time target this week, receiving a verbal commitment from 6-4, 240-pound Brooke Point (Stafford, VA) defensive end Lanford Collins, the Fredericksburg Free Lance-Star reports. TechSideline.com's 10th ranked player in the Postseason In-State Top 40, Collins pledged to the Hokies on Wednesday before releasing the news today.

Rockbridge Jr. Primed for Busy Spring

A first-team all-district, second-team all-region, second-team all-Timesland and first-team all-state underclassmen selection in 2008, Rockbridge County (VA) junior offensive lineman/defensive lineman Caleb Farris now hopes to enjoy success in the recruiting trail. A host of schools are showing initial interest in the 6-4 1/2, 300-pound prospect, who has been and will be very active on the recruiting trail.

Hopper Reflects on VT Official Visit

More than a month after leading Seventy-First (Fayetteville, N.C.) to a state championship victory, cornerback recruit James Hopper made an official visit to the school where he will spend the next four or five years of his life. The 5-10, 180-pound prospect made an official visit to Virginia Tech last weekend and enjoyed a preview of things to come.

Atlantic (Delray Beach, FL) cornerback Jayron Hosley has narrowed his list to South Florida and Virginia Tech, but before he makes his college choice he will take an official visit to Blacksburg. Atlantic head coach Andre Thaddies admits that the Hokies "came in late" in recruiting the 5-10, 173-pound Hosley, but Tech will get the final shot to impress this weekend.

Cody Journell's VT Official Visit

Cody Journell enjoyed his time in Blacksburg this past weekend, when he made an official visit to Virginia Tech. The 6-0, 175-pound place-kicker, a star out of Giles High School (Pearisburg, VA), has been committed to the Hokies since last June, so the weekend offered an opportunity to relax and learn more about the school he will attend for the next four or five years.

Jarrett Reflects on Latest Visit

Cox (Virginia Beach, VA) place-kicker/punter Drew Jarrett holds one official scholarship offer from James Madison and is drawing interest from UAB, but his college decision likely will come down to the Dukes, Virginia and Virginia Tech. Right now, the big decision for the 6-0, 180-pound Jarrett is whether to accept the full scholarship or accept a recruited walk-on spot with one of the two in-state Division 1A programs.

Williams Reflects on Senior Season

Jerrodd Williams' interception return for a touchdown sealed a 24-16 victory for the South Carolina squad in the 2008 edition of the North Carolina/South Carolina Shrine Bowl. Making big plays is nothing new for the 6-1, 185-pound prospect, who starred at cornerback and on special teams at Daniel High School (Central, S.C.).

Meadowbrook (Richmond, VA) star Morgan Moses has now taken three official visits, leaving two remaining official visits should he decide to use them. The 6-7, 340-pound prospect admits he is "ready to have [the recruiting process over with]," but at this point he isn't sure when a decision could come.

Is Bolling Nearing a Decision?

Brookville (Lynchburg, VA) standout offensive/defensive lineman Devin Bolling had originally planned to make an official visit to Virginia Tech this coming weekend, but at this time that no longer appears likely. The 6-5, 270-pound senior may now travel to Blacksburg on January 30th, or he may decide he has all the information he needs to make a decision among Connecticut, Virginia Tech and Wake Forest.
