Hokies Hang Tough, but Fall to #2 UNC
March 5, 2009
For the second game in a row, Virginia Tech trailed at halftime only to come back and tie the game in the second half. For the second game in a row, they came up short in the end. This time it came against #2 UNC 86-78, and the loss makes this Sunday's game at Florida State a must-win if the Hokies want to make the NCAA tournament. Tech fell to 17-12 overall and 7-8 in the ACC with the loss.

2008-09 Basketball Game Preview: #2 UNC at Virginia Tech
March 4, 2009
The Hokies will face their biggest challenge of the year on Wednesday when #2 North Carolina invades Cassell Coliseum. The Tar Heels are the most talented team in the ACC, and they are competing for the #1 overall seed in the NCAA tournament. Led by Tyler Hansbrough and Ty Lawson, the Heels are an offensive juggernaut, and the Hokies will have to keep the game low-scoring to have a chance.

2008-09 Around the ACC: March 2, 2009
March 2, 2009
Things are starting to clear up in the ACC. Five teams are locks for the NCAA tournament, one more is very close to being a lock, and three others are fighting for their postseason lives. March Madness is here, and teams are leaving everything on the court.

Hokies Struggle on O Against Duke
March 2, 2009
I was intrigued by the fact that a lot of the commentary on Duke's victory over VT centered upon Virginia Tech's defensive failures. Tech coach Seth Greenberg, columnist Aaron McFarling of the Roanoke Times, and TV analyst Jimmy Dykes spent a lot of time talking about how the Hokies failed to execute their scouting reports and contain Duke's Gerald Henderson and Kyle Singler. I would counter that Tech's difficulties on offense were far more responsible for the defeat than defensive lapses.

Despite Furious Rally, Hokies Fall to Duke
February 28, 2009
Virginia Tech played #7 Duke close on Saturday afternoon, but it wasn't quite enough. The Blue Devils walked out of Cassell Coliseum with a 72-65 win. The Hokies dropped to 17-11 overall and 7-7 in the ACC with the loss, and they lost a golden opportunity to help their chances for an NCAA tournament berth.

2008-09 Basketball Game Preview: Virginia Tech vs. #7 Duke
February 27, 2009
Each victory makes the next game even bigger. After a huge win at #12 Clemson in Wednesday night, the Hokies welcome #7 Duke into Cassell Coliseum on Saturday afternoon. A win would guarantee Tech at least an 8-8 record in ACC play, and it would strengthen their case for an NCAA tournament berth.

Crunching Stats from VT-Clemson
February 26, 2009
Last night's Hokies-Tigers matchup was a typical gut-wrencher. I always find myself thinking about stats during a basketball game, and the little things that separate a win from a loss. Here's a closer look at the key stats from last night's game.

Hokies Get Revenge on Clemson
February 26, 2009
With their backs against the wall, Virginia Tech came up with a huge 80-77 victory at #12 Clemson on Wednesday night. The win puts the Hokies back into the NCAA tournament picture. Tech moved to 17-10 overall, with a 7-6 mark in ACC play. Clemson dropped to 22-5 and 8-5.

2008-09 Basketball Game Preview: Virginia Tech at #12 Clemson
February 25, 2009
Losers of three consecutive games, Virginia Tech will look to get back to their winning ways when they take on Clemson in Littlejohn Coliseum on Wednesday night. If there was any point in the Seth Greenberg era when the Hokies needed a big win, this is it. Unfortunately, it won't be easy. The Tigers are ranked as high as #12 in the national polls and #8 in the RPI.

2008-09 Around the ACC: February 23rd, 2009
February 23, 2009
The top half of the ACC is starting to separate itself from the bottom half. It looks like the four first round byes for the ACC Tournament are up for grabs amongst five different teams. Meanwhile, two teams who spent the first half of the season near the bottom of the standings are making a move up, while another team that looked NCAA tournament bound is dropping like a rock.

Hokies Fall to FSU in Final Seconds
February 22, 2009
A.D. Vassallo's open three-pointer at the buzzer didn't fall, and Florida State walked out of Cassell Coliseum with a 67-65 victory on Saturday night. The loss is Tech's third in a row, and it puts them at 16-10 overall and 6-6 in the ACC.

2008-09 Basketball Game Preview: Virginia Tech vs. Florida State
February 20, 2009
Virginia Tech begins their brutal season-ending five-game stretch on Saturday afternoon with a home game against the Florida State Seminoles. The 'Noles are a lot better than anyone gave them credit for coming into the year. They are in a four-way tie for second place in the ACC with a 7-4 conference record, 20 overall wins, and an RPI of 18 (according to realtimerpi.com). At this point, they appear to be a lock for the NCAA tournament.

NCAA Hopes Flickering, Hokies Look to Regroup
February 18, 2009
There it is again, one of those pesky two-game losing streaks, the kind that come along all the time in the ACC. The problem is, in order to go to the NCAA tournament, this wasn't a two-game losing streak the Hokies could afford. After dropping consecutive games to a subpar Maryland team and a UVa team that is #11 in the conference and one-time loser of eight straight games, the NCAA tournament is now unlikely for the Hokies.

Hoos Beat Cold-Shooting Hokies 75-61
February 18, 2009
Virginia used a 17-2 run that spanned both halves to beat Virginia Tech 75-61 in Charlottesville on Wednesday night. Playing without starting forward Jeff Allen, their leading rebounder and third-leading scorer, the Hokies couldn't get much done offensively as they lost their second straight game. Tech dropped to 16-9 overall and 6-5 in the ACC.

2008-09 Basketball Game Preview: Virginia Tech at UVA
February 18, 2009
Virginia Tech is back in action on Wednesday night for a big ACC game against in-state rival Virginia. The Hokies defeated the Hoos 78-75 in the first meeting between these teams in Blacksburg, and they'll be looking to sweep UVA for the second consecutive season. Virginia has no hopes for postseason play, but they can put a big dent in Tech's NCAA tournament chances with an upset.

February 16, 2009
One team is beginning to establish themselves as the best team in the ACC, while another contender for that title lost two big games this past week. After another week of basketball, there is still a jumbled mess in the middle of the ACC standings.

Hokies Fall to Maryland 83-73
February 14, 2009
Virginia Tech's two-game winning streak came to an end on Saturday when the Hokies fell to Maryland 83-73 in the Comcast Center. The Terps led from start to finish, and the win improves their record to 16-8 overall and 5-5 in ACC play. Tech drops to 16-8 overall and 6-4 in the ACC with the loss.

2008-09 Basketball Game Preview: Virginia Tech at Maryland
February 13, 2009
All games in the ACC are big (that's one of the reasons we love this conference), and the Hokies will get yet another test on Saturday from the Maryland Terrapins. The Terps look like an NIT team right now, but they still have an outside shot at making a run and earning an NCAA tournament berth. They'll be gunning for Virginia Tech with everything they have.

Hokies Down Yellow Jackets 76-71
February 11, 2009
Virginia Tech led the entire game and knocked off Georgia Tech 76-71 in Cassell Coliseum on Wednesday night. The game was tight, particularly late, but the Hokies did enough to move to 16-7 overall and 6-3 in the ACC. The Yellow Jackets dropped to 10-13 overall and 1-9 in ACC play.

2008-09 Basketball Game Preview: Virginia Tech vs. Georgia Tech
February 11, 2009
Virginia Tech takes on a struggling Georgia Tech team on Wednesday night in Blacksburg, and the Hokies need to win it. They can not afford a home loss to a team ranked outside the Top 100 of the RPI. A win will also put Tech in a tie in the loss column for second place in the ACC, as either Duke or UNC will lose their third conference game of the year tonight.

In ACC Basketball, Things Even Out in the End
February 10, 2009
It seems like we learn something new after every week of ACC basketball. This past weekend, I learned that karma does indeed come back around. There were several examples of this in Sunday's Tech-NC State game, but examples could be found in another ACC game as well.

Second Half Rally Sends Tech Past NC State
February 8, 2009
With 13:33 remaining in the second half, Courtney Fells hit a jumper to put NC State up 63-45. It looked like the Hokies were going to get run off the court by the Wolfpack for the seventh straight game. However, Tech rallied in the final 13 minutes, sent the game to overtime, and then won it 91-87. The Hokies improved to 15-7 overall and 5-3 in the ACC with the win. NC State dropped to 12-9 overall and 2-6 in conference play.

Surely This Can't Go On Forever
February 6, 2009
Uh-oh, here we go again. It's time for Virginia Tech to face the NC State Wolfpack in basketball. Hide the women and children, and avert your eyes, because history says it's going to get ugly. "My, what big teeth you have, NC State!" "The better to eat you with, Virginia Tech!" Surely this -- NC State beating Virginia Tech -- can't go on forever.

2008-09 Basketball Game Preview: Virginia Tech vs. NC State
February 6, 2009
Virginia Tech returns to Cassell Coliseum on Sunday needing a win to get their season back on track. Unfortunately the opponent is NC State, who has won six straight games against the Hokies. The last time Tech beat the Wolfpack was on January 19, 2005 when Jamon Gordon blocked a Julius Hodge jumper to give the Hokies a 72-71 win. Since then, it's been all NC State in this series.
