Hokie Hoops and the Polls June 5, 2006 When we think about Virginia Tech football, we are used to top 10 rankings and the hype that comes with them. In fact, the football program has reached a point where any ranking out of the top 15 seems a bit low. But the Virginia Tech men's basketball team has been ranked in the AP Poll for just one season since the last time Halley's Comet was spotted from Earth, and the Hokies have rarely appeared in the AP Poll in the last six decades. more
VT Recruits in Southern Invitational May 8, 2006 As always, the Boo Williams squad was one of the most talented teams in the Southern Invitational field and, although they fell to eventual champ Chicago Jaguars in the semifinals, they promise to be a force in the AAU tourneys to come. Virginia Tech is targeting a handful of recruits from the Boo Williams team, including a top guard and several power forwards. 2007 commitment Augustus Gilchrist played in the event as well.

Tech Hoops Recruits Moving Up the Charts May 5, 2006 As we rapidly approach the summer months, final player rankings for the hoops class of 2006 are starting to come in, and Virginia Tech's signees have some very impressive marks. At this point it appears that Seth Greenberg has signed the highest-rated recruiting class in school history, and the stock of some players is still going up. Rivals.com released their latest batch of rankings last month, and Scout.com did the same at the beginning of May. Using those rankings, and that of the ACC Area Sports Journal, here is an updated look at each of Tech's new players. more
Appleton-Miller's Signing Rounds Out Strong 2006 Class April 13, 2006 Virginia Tech announced the singing of highly-touted basketball prospect Tyrone Appleton-Miller to a letter of intent on Wednesday. Bowden Commits for 2008 Class April 11, 2006 Even though Shamarr Bowden will not arrive at Virginia Tech until 2008, that doesn't mean head coach Seth Greenberg was any less excited about Bowden's verbal commitment to the Hokies this past weekend. A 6-3, 160-pound shooting guard prospect, Bowden is the first player to commit to Tech for the 2008 class. more
DeMatha's Munson Has Outstanding Season April 4, 2006 Virginia Tech 2006 signee Nigel Munson enjoyed a tremendous senior season individually and for his team, saying “I went out the way I was supposed to go out as a senior. I did all I could do to better my team and myself as a player, on and off the court. I think my stepping up this year scoring-wise helped us out a lot this year.”
The 6-0, 175-pound point guard led DeMatha Catholic, one of the nation’s top high school basketball programs, to a 34-1 overall record including a WCAC Championship title. more
Early 2006-07 ACC Basketball Outlook March 29, 2006 It has been well-documented on TechSideline.com and by other media outlets that the Hokies will have a lot of experience next season. Tech returns five starters, and the only seniors lost off this year's team were from the end of the bench. VT is expected to be one of the deepest and most experienced teams in the ACC. That's true, but the gap won't be as large as many would imagine. more
Q&A Session: 2006 Signee Lewis Witcher March 27, 2006 Franklin County (Rocky Mount, VA) Lewis Witcher is the lone low post threat entering Virginia Tech’s program out of the 2006 class. At 6-8 ½, currently about 215 pounds, Witcher is an athletic player who has a knack for rebounding and possesses some nice offensive talent as well. A 4-star prospect by Rivals.com, Witcher is looking forward to the opportunity of playing and contributing in the ACC next season.

ACC Ticket Situation Shows Athletic Department Has a Lot to Learn March 15, 2006 Late last Friday, I posted a rant about Virginia Tech's poor fan showing at the ACC tournament in Greensboro, noting that VT had failed to sell out their full allotment of tournament tickets. While I'm disappointed that Hokie fans didn't show a better appetite for tourney tickets and didn't show up in large numbers in Greensboro, the discussion that ensued revealed that the Virginia Tech athletic department, in the person of the Hokie Club, learned a harsh lesson about supply and demand – or lack thereof – with regards to basketball tickets. In their efforts to sell the tickets, the Hokie Club made numerous mistakes along the way. more

2005-06 Basketball Recap: Hokies Lose Heartbreaker to #12 Boston College March 4, 2006 Virginia Tech’s regular season came to an end on Saturday afternoon in Chestnut Hill in a way that is all too familiar for Hokie fans, players and coaches. Tech played #12 Boston College down to the wire, but Zabian Dowdell’s three-pointer at the buzzer fell just short, and the Eagles held on for a 59-57 victory. Close Games Highlight Hokies' Improving Competitiveness in the ACC March 1, 2006 Since the 2005-06 basketball season began, you’ve probably read about a few more nail-biters than you’d like to remember. Most have been Virginia Tech losses, but there have been a few wins sprinkled in now and then. In fact, close games have been a major trend in the ACC this year. There are some teams in the ACC that are good. There are some teams in the ACC that are very close to being good. The only difference between the "good teams" and the "very close to being good" teams is that the good teams win the majority of their close games. Unfortunately, that hasn’t been the case with the Hokies, but even though they're losing more ACC games this season, the statistics show that they're continuing to become more competitive. more
