2005-06 Basketball Recap: #20 UNC Escapes, Beats Tech 64-61
January 11, 2006
Virginia Tech suffered another heartbreaking loss on Tuesday night, falling 64-61 to #20 North Carolina at Cassell Coliseum. The loss drops Tech to 10-6 overall and 0-3 in the ACC. UNC improves to 10-2 and 2-0 in conference play. The defeat is Tech’s fifth close loss of the season, with those five losses coming by a total of 15 points.

2005-06 Basketball Game Preview: Virginia Tech vs. UNC
January 10, 2006
Virginia Tech will return to Cassell Coliseum searching for their first ACC victory on Tuesday night when they host #20 North Carolina. The Hokies (10-5, 0-2) have been one of the ACC’s hard luck teams this season, with four of their five losses coming by a combined 12 points. They are hoping a return to Cassell Coliseum and the emerging offensive threat of Wynton Witherspoon will be enough to get them the victory over a young but talented Tar Heel team that is 9-2 overall and 1-0 in the ACC.

Tech trailed by as many as 14 points in the first half, cut the lead to two on several occasions late in the game, but ultimately ran out of time when the Seminoles hit their free throws down the stretch.

With OOC Done, Hokie Women Dive Into ACC Schedule
January 6, 2006
Over the summer, Tech fans argued over whether or not their beloved Hokies would be able to go 12-0 during the regular season. Although the football team fell just a little short, the women’s basketball team accomplished this remarkable feat a week ago when it defeated Texas A&M-Corpus Christi to win the Lady Luck Classic. This was the fifth consecutive in-season tournament where Tech has gone undefeated. Tech dropped their next game, the ACC opener against NC State, but bounced back Wednesday night to rout High Point 91-52, leaving the Hokies undefeated in out-of-conference play.

The Hokies are coming off a 58-55 defeat at the hands of Old Dominion in which they played poorly on the offensive end and did not shoot well from the free throw line. This will be Tech's final out-of-conference game, and it is important that they get things back on track before playing 15 consecutive ACC games to end the season.

2005-06 Basketball Recap: Hokies Falter on the Road, Lose to ODU 58-55
December 31, 2005
The Old Dominion Monarchs withstood a late Virginia Tech rally and knocked off the Hokies 58-55 on Friday night. Virginia Tech spoiled a good defensive effort by missing numerous open shots and shooting poorly from the free throw line. Tech cut the ODU lead to one point late in the game, but a costly technical foul on Jamon Gordon gave the Monarchs two free throws and possession of the ball, and the Hokies were unable to overcome the deficit. ODU improves to 8-4 with the victory, while Tech drops to 9-4.

2005-06 Basketball Game Preview: Virginia Tech vs. Old Dominion
December 30, 2005
The Virginia Tech men’s basketball team will begin a three-game road stretch when they travel to Old Dominion to play a very tough game on Friday night at 7pm. It is a very important game for the Hokies. A road win would give them extra points in the RPI as well as ten wins in the out-of-conference portion of their schedule. But getting a victory is far from certain. Old Dominion is the favorite, and they are very tough at home. The Hokies will have to play their best to win.

Hokies Gut Out Big Win
December 19, 2005
At the conclusion of Saturday night's (Sunday morning's?) win over Stanford, Virginia Tech coach Seth Greenberg smiled and pumped his fist. You're probably thinking, "So what? His team just won a game." But Greenberg doesn't do that after every win, so the fact that he did it after Tech's 59-52 win over the Cardinal tells you that this was one he treasured. He should, because winning out west, over a west coast team, late at night, is a victory to build on.

The Hokies (7-3, 0-1) have been playing good basketball of late, losing to Duke on a halfcourt shot, blowing out North Carolina A&T, and defeating former Big East foe St. John's. Stanford (2-3) has not enjoyed the same type of success.

Hokies Hope Surging Hoops Team Can Keep it Up
December 13, 2005
Ten games into the season, Virginia Tech's men's basketball team is 7-3, which isn't appreciably better than either of Seth Greenberg's first two Hokie teams. But this year's Hokies seem to be gelling earlier, establishing an identity earlier, and coming on strong earlier than previous editions. That bodes well for a team with NCAA Tournament aspirations, though the road to the Big Dance is long and hard.
