These Guys Are Taking Years Off My Life
February 9, 2006
Another game, another stressful, down-to-the-wire finish. Virginia Tech has played three straight games decided by one point, and I don't think I can take anymore. Remember when Fred Sanford used to clutch his chest, look to the heavens, and yell, "I'm coming Elizabeth!!" That's me. These guys are killing me.

2005-06 Basketball Recap: Hokies Nip Tigers in Overtime Thriller 75-74
February 8, 2006
Virginia Tech traveled to Clemson on Wednesday night and came away with a tough 75-74 overtime victory over the Tigers, winning the game in dramatic fashion. The Hokies trailed for the majority of the game, missed a ton of free throws down the stretch and had to withstand two potential game-winning field goal attempts by Clemson at the end to hang on for the victory. Virginia Tech (13-10, 3-7) has now won three of their last four games. Each of their last three games has been decided by one point. 2005-06 Basketball Game Preview: Virginia Tech at Clemson
February 7, 2006
Virginia Tech will travel south on Wednesday to take on the Clemson Tigers in an ACC game that both teams need to win. The Hokies (12-10, 2-7) have had a number of close losses this season and badly need a victory to jumpstart the second half of ACC play. The Tigers (14-8, 3-6) are losers of five of their last six games, all of which came against ACC competition. At one point in the season both teams aspired for an NCAA Tournament berth, but right now it appears that an NIT bid is most likely for Clemson. If the Hokies want to reach the NIT, winning this game would be a big step in the right direction.

2005-06 Basketball Recap: Washington Swats Yellow Jackets, Hokies Win 63-62
February 1, 2006
With so many close losses on the season, the Virginia Tech Hokies finally had one go their way in the closing seconds. With the game tied at 62, Georgia Tech’s D’Andre Bell missed the game winning shot, but Jeremis Smith grabbed the offensive rebound and scored, apparently winning the game for the Yellow Jackets. But the whistle blew and Smith was called for going over the back of Deron Washington with 0.5 seconds left in the game. Washington went to the free throw line, hit the first free throw, and missed the second on purpose to prevent a long inbounds pass. Georgia Tech was unable to get off a final shot, and the Hokies held on for a 63-62 victory.

Gasping for Air, No-Quit Hokies Find Something to Smile About
January 30, 2006
This is why they play the games. Down to six scholarship players, missing their top two inside players, with their on-court leader suffering from a gimpy ankle, the sad-sack Hokies trudged down the highway to Winston-Salem … and came away with an improbable win. How Virginia Tech beat Wake Forest is a story of matchups, scoring that came from an unanticipated source, leadership from a player with the heart of a lion, and simple perseverance.

January 26, 2006
#2 Duke jumped ahead of Virginia Tech early, kept their foot on Tech’s throat through most of the second half, and coasted to a relatively easy 80-67 victory in Cassell Coliseum on Thursday night. The Blue Devils avenged the 67-65 loss to the Hokies in Blacksburg last season and sent VT further into the ACC cellar. Tech is now 10-9 overall and 0-6 in conference play. Duke remains in first place in the ACC with an 6-0 conference mark and 18-1 overall record.

2005-06 Basketball Game Preview: Virginia Tech vs. #2 Duke
January 25, 2006
Five games into their sophomore season in the ACC, the Virginia Tech men’s basketball team finds itself at 0-5 in league play and dead last in the conference. This is the way things were supposed to be last year when the Hokies finished 8-8 in the ACC and near the top of the conference standings. Nothing has gone right for Tech this year. They’ve suffered injuries, illnesses, dunks are popping back out of the nets, and countless other things have gone wrong. Last year it was the Hokies who won a lot of close games, and the karma is coming full circle this season. But on Thursday night, VT has a chance to get things turned around in a big way when #2 Duke visits Blacksburg.

Hokie Basketball Not a Ride for the Faint of Heart
January 19, 2006
Seventeen games into last season, the Tech men's basketball team was 11-6 and riding an unexpected five-game winning streak, including four straight ACC victories. The team was 4-2 in the ACC and shocking everyone, including their delirious fans. This season, the team is 10-7, a dismal 0-4 in conference, and if something can go wrong, it has. "These are the times that try men's souls," Thomas Paine wrote, and though he was writing about a much more serious topic than Hokie basketball, the quote fits.
