The Virginia Tech men's basketball team will play their last out-of-conference game of the season on Monday night when they host Charleston Southern. The Hokies will be looking got get back on the right track after a tough loss at Richmond last Thursday. Like Tech, Charleston Southern is a young team that relies on a number of freshmen.

Virginia Tech will look to win their third consecutive game when they take on Richmond in the Robins Center on Thursday evening. The Hokies are coming off wins over Hofstra and St. John's in the Aeropostale Holiday Festival in Madison Square Garden over the weekend. Tech is 8-5, and they still have a chance to reach 10 wins before facing the meat of their conference schedule, but they must defeat the Spiders to reach that goal.

2007-08 Basketball Game Recap: Hokies Beat St. John's, Win Holiday Festival

It was an ugly game, but the Hokies got it done. Virginia Tech knocked off St. John's 54-48 to become the 2007 Aeropostale Holiday Festival Champions. Tech closed out a close game in the final few minutes and improved their overall record to 8-5. They have two out-of-conference games remaining against Richmond and Charleston Southern before hitting the meat of their ACC schedule.

Bad starts could be considered the reason for several Virginia Tech losses so far this season. That wasn't the case on Friday night, as the Hokies blew the doors off Madison Square Garden from the opening tip, routing Hofstra 84-59 in a game that wasn't as close as the final score indicated. Tech improved to 7-5 with the win, and they'll take on St. John's in the championship game of the Aeropostale Holiday Festival on Saturday at 3:30.

Ishmael Smith’s buzzer beater gave Wake Forest a dramatic 77-75 victory over Virginia Tech on Sunday night in Winston-Salem. Smith’s shot was the end of a 10-0 run over the final 1:17 of the game. Despite holding an eight-point lead so late in the game, the young Hokies couldn’t quite close the deal. Wake Forest improved to 8-3 overall and 1-0 in the ACC with the win, while Tech dropped to 6-5 overall and 0-1 in conference play.

Virginia Tech's young basketball players will get their first look at an ACC team on Sunday when they travel to Winston-Salem to take on Wake Forest. The Hokies have beaten Wake Forest three times in a row, including a December matchup in Cassell Coliseum last season. Unfortunately this game is on the road, where the Hokies have struggled defensively so far this season.

Virginia Tech overcame a sluggish first half to defeat Liberty 58-46 in Cassell Coliseum on Wednesday night. The Hokies suffered through a bad shooting night from the outside, but rode their defensive prowess to victory. Tech is now 6-4 heading into their ACC opener against Wake Forest. Liberty fell to 5-6 with the loss.

2007-08 Basketball Game Recap: Bad First Half Dooms Hokies at ODU

A big second half rally couldn't overcome a poor first half defensive performance, as Virginia Tech fell to Old Dominion 72-69 in Norfolk on Sunday. It was a tale of two halves, and ultimately ODU's first half was better than Tech's second half. The Hokies dropped to 5-4 overall, while the Monarchs improved to 6-4 on the season.

It was the second game in a row the Hokies have held an opponent to under 40 points. The win takes them to 5-3 on the season, and they get the rest of the week off before facing in-state rival Old Dominion next Sunday.

The Spartans had already defeated Georgia Tech earlier in the year, but the Hokies would have none of it, jumping out to an 11-0 lead and never looking back. Tech improved to 4-3 with the win, while UNC-Greensboro fell to 3-3.

The Hokies will play their second game of a three-game home stand when they host UNC-Greensboro in Cassell Coliseum on Tuesday night. UNC-Greensboro has already claimed one ACC scalp so far in this young season, and they'll be looking for their second on Tuesday. The Spartans are a similar team to UNC-Asheville, whom the Hokies defeated 65-51 on Saturday night. However, UNC-Greensboro's top player is post-man Kyle Hines, who is one of the best small-conference players in America.

Virginia Tech returned to the friendly confines of Cassell Coliseum and got a much needed 65-51 victory over UNC-Asheville on Saturday night in Blacksburg. The Hokies had to work hard for this one, as they trailed at one point in the second half, but they ran away with the game at the end. Tech improved to 3-3 with the win, while UNC-Asheville dropped to 6-2.

Durant a Strong Point Guard Recruit

New Hampton Prep (N.H.) guard Kendall Durant had official offers from Colorado, Penn State, South Carolina and Tulsa, but the loyalty he felt with the Virginia Tech coaching staff ultimately put the Hokies over the top. The 6-3, 185-pound prospect signed with the Hokies on Wednesday, several days after making an official visit to Blacksburg.

Swindle to Commit to VT

Gulliver Prep (Miami, FL) center Gene Swindle made an official visit to Virginia Tech this past weekend. Tonight, the 6-11, 260-pound senior made his college decision, choosing Virginia Tech over offers from Penn State and South Florida.

2007-08 Basketball Game Recap: Freshman Allen Leads Hokies to Win Over Elon
November 9, 2007
Highly-touted freshman Jeff Allen lived up to the hype in his college debut, leading the freshman-laden Tech team to a 69-64 victory over Elon on Friday night in Cassell Coliseum. The Hokies controlled the game the entire way, but could never put it away thanks to poor free throw shooting in the second half. Nevertheless, Tech is 1-0, and they'll have a nice break before playing in the Great Alaska Shootout beginning on November 22.
