Reports: Oak Hill Guard Verbals to VT

Multiple sources, including an article on Scout.com, are reporting that Virginia Tech has gained a verbal commitment from 5-11, 180-pound guard Lamont "Mo Mo" Jones, a senior out of Oak Hill Academy in Mouth of Wilson, Virginia. Jones, who is expected to sign in the spring, is Virginia Tech's fifth recruit of the 2009 recruiting class.

2008-09 Basketball Preview: Puerto Rico Tip-Off

After a 2-0 start in Cassell Coliseum, Virginia Tech is now in San Juan getting ready for the O'Reilly Auto Parts Puerto Rico Tip-Off. The field is very challenging, featuring two Top 25 teams, including last year's national runner-up, Memphis. Traditional basketball schools such as Missouri, Xavier and Seton Hall are also showing up. This has the potential to be one of the best tournaments of the season.

Clutch Free Throw Shooting Leads Tech Past Mount St. Mary's

Virginia Tech struggled again offensively, but a late game rally and some clutch free throw shooting by Malcolm Delaney gave the Hokies a 62-57 win over Mount St. Mary's on Monday night. Tech is 2-0 on the season, and they'll now travel to San Juan to take part in the O'Reilly Auto Parts Puerto Rico Tip-off.

Virginia Tech will have another early season challenge on their hands on Monday night when Mount St. Mary's comes to town. The Mountaineers were in the NCAA tournament last season, and they are the preseason pick to win the Northeast Conference again this year.

Hokies Edge Gardner-Webb 65-62

Virginia Tech ran out of gas over the final 10 minutes of the game, and a comfortable lead turned into a narrow 65-62 win over Gardner-Webb on Friday night. The Hokies are now 1-0 on the season, and they look forward to a Monday night matchup with Mount St. Mary's.

The much anticipated 2008-09 season tips off for the men's basketball team on Friday night. The Hokies host Gardner-Webb, a team that is much more dangerous than their name suggests. It will be the first of two games Tech will play in Cassell Coliseum before departing for Puerto Rico.

2008-09 Men's Basketball Preview

In less than a month, Virginia Tech's men's basketball team will begin its most anticipated season since the 1995-96 campaign. The Hokies return four starters and all of their backups from a team that was a game away from making the NCAA tournament. Tech made it to the quarterfinals of the NIT and won 21 games, with six freshmen as part of the playing rotation.

Atkins Excited to Become a Hokie

Tucker (Stone Mountain, GA) guard/forward Manny Atkins, one of Virginia Tech's four 2009 class commitments, made his official visit to Blacksburg last month. The 6-7, 200-pound prospect has not wavered from the verbal commitment he made in June, but the official visit certainly helped to further solidify his decision.

VT Commit Green Excited About New School

Point guard Erick Green made a tough decision this summer, choosing to transfer from defending state champion Millbrook (Winchester, VA) to Paul VI in Fairfax, Virginia. The 6-2 senior is happy with the decision; a move he believes will help him prepare on and off the court for his time at Virginia Tech.

2010 PG Spradling Visits UVa, Virginia Tech

Shawnee Mission South (Overland Park, KS) point guard Will Spradling followed through with his plans to visit Virginia and Virginia Tech late last week, checking out the in-state ACC programs on Thursday and Friday. The 6-2, 150-pound junior still has not been offered by either program, but one of the two programs plans to take a much closer look in the coming weeks.

Class of 2010 Profile: Miller School G/F Mychal Parker

Clemson, Florida, Virginia and Virginia Tech were all represented at the Miller School (Charlottesville, VA) last week, which was the beginning of the fall contact period for Division 1 men's basketball. Drawing interest from these schools is a newcomer to Miller, 6-6, 180-pound guard/forward Mychal Parker, a prospect out of Little Washington, North Carolina. One of the top ranked juniors in the country, Parker is in his first year at the Miller School.

Shawnee Mission South (Overland Park, Kansas) point guard Will Spradling does not intend for his recruitment to be a long one. The 6-2, 150-pound junior, a first-team all-league, first-team all-county and honorable mention all-state performer last year as a sophomore, would like to have made his college choice by the time his junior season begins.

Because of Tropical Storm Hanna, Courtland (Fredericksburg, VA) junior forward Josh Hairston was unable to make his most recent scheduled unofficial visit. The 6-8 prospect, one of the top recruits in the 2010 recruiting class, had planned to be in Charlottesville on Saturday to check out UVa but decided against making the trip.

A top rising junior, John Marshall (Richmond, VA) product Travis McKie has earned six official scholarship offers to this point in his recruitment. Boston College, Clemson, Maryland, Virginia, Virginia Tech and Wake Forest have offered the 6-6, 185-pound forward, a first-team Richmond Times-Dispatch all-metro selection last season as a sophomore.

Hairston Updates Recruitment

Courtland (Spotsylvania, VA) forward Josh Hairston, one of the most highly recruited players in the 2010 recruiting class, has earned scholarship offers from Clemson, Duke, Kansas, Memphis, Ohio State, Virginia and Virginia Tech, among others. The 6-8, 215-pound prospect would like to make his college choice by the beginning of his junior season, but he admits that he is open to waiting beyond that timetable if necessary.

Green Talks Recent AAU Performance, Basketball Future

Coming off of an 18-point, 5-rebound and 3-assist per game performance in which he guided Millbrook (Winchester, VA) to a Group AA state championship title, rising senior Erick Green had big expectations heading into this spring and summer's AAU basketball circuit. Unfortunately, the 6-2, 170-pound point guard suffered an ankle injury early on in the AAU circuit, and he has been hampered by the injury ever since. Despite the injury, Green has been pleased with his AAU circuit season and especially his performance at a recent AAU event.

VT Commit Jarell Eddie a Top 2010 Player

In Jarell Eddie, Virginia Tech has scored a commitment from a 4-star prospect (as rated by Rivals.com and Scout.com) who first played on Cannon School's (Concord, N.C.) varsity boys basketball program as an 8th-grader. As an 8th-grader, Eddie, who stood 6-5 at the time, was more of a post player according to Cannon School head coach Ron Johnson. Since then, the star rising junior has almost transformed his game.

VT Men's Basketball Scores Two Commitments

Petersburg (VA) rising senior Cadarian Raines decided to end his recruitment yesterday, verbally committing to Virginia Tech over offers from George Mason, Maryland and VCU. The 6-8, 215-pound power forward is Virginia Tech's fourth commitment for the 2009 recruiting class.

Boggs Talks NBPA, Virginia Tech

Virginia Tech's future backcourt was on display at last week's NBPA Top 100 Camp. For Hidden Valley (Roanoke, VA) rising senior Ben Boggs, the chance to play with fellow 2009 class commit Erick Green was an opportunity not only to play alongside a close friend, but to get to know each other's tendencies on the court as well.

Two years ago, Virginia Tech landed a standout wing forward out of the state of Georgia in former Stone Mountain High School standout Terrell Bell. Two years later, head coach Seth Greenberg has received a verbal commitment from another wing from the Stone Mountain area.

C.J. Harris Makes Visit

Mount Tabor (Winston-Salem, N.C.) rising senior combo guard C.J. Harris followed through and did indeed visit Virginia Tech on Sunday, a day after the NBPA Top 100 Camp in Charlottesville. The 6-3, 175-pound prospect had been to Tech several times for football games, but this was the first opportunity he had to thoroughly tour the campus.

Mount Tabor Star Can Play Either Guard Spot

Mount Tabor (Winston-Salem, N.C.) guard C.J. Harris attended last year's NBPA Top 100 Camp as a rising junior and admits "I got pushed around a lot, but it really prepared me. It showed me where I needed to be and how much stronger, quicker and faster I needed to get."
